NASA's new moon-landing supercomputer is more powerful and more eco-friendly

NASA has officially opened its new supercomputer, Aitken, at the Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley. It uses a modular design which requires less electricity and power than traditional facilities and and it will allow researchers to run complex simulations more quickly. Aitken can run simulations at up to 3.69 petaflops of theoretical performance and has 221 TB of storage. It has 1,150 nodes and 46,080 cores and is powered by a HPE SGI 8600 system using second-generation Intel Xeon processors with Mellanox InfiniBand for networking. To keep all that computing power cool, the housing module makes use of the California environment, using "outdoor air, fan technology, and a circulating water system" to remove heat from the computers. It is the first of a potential 16 modules which can be quickly constructed and which could be used for both computing and data storage. AMD delays 16-core Ryzen 9 CPU to November

We hope you weren't determined to build an all-out AMD gaming rig in September. AMD has delayed the release of its 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X processor by two months to sometime in November. The company wants to meet "strong demand" for the highly parallel CPU, the company said in a statement to AnandTech . In short, it wants to be sure there's enough supply to justify a release. There is an upshot to this news for enthusiasts, though. The statement also revealed that the third-generation Ryzen Threadripper will arrive at the same time. AMD was coy about just what to expect from these parts, but it's safe to presume there will be an abundance of cores ( up to 48) and a host of performance improvements thanks to the denser 7-nanometer manufacturing process. Hackers broke into Sprint accounts through Samsung's website

Sprint's security team is having a very, very lousy 2019. On top of the earlier Boost Mobile breach , the carrier has revealed that hackers obtained "unauthorized access" to an unspecified number of Sprint accounts through Samsung's "add a line" website. The provider said that the data didn't pose a "substantial risk" for fraud or identity theft and didn't include credit card or social security numbers, but there's still good reason for concern. Intruders may have seen names, billing addresses, phone numbers, device IDs and account numbers, among other sensitive details. The network found out about the breach on June 22nd, and reset PIN codes for all the affected accounts on June 25th. In a statement to CNET , Samsung said the attempts were using Sprint login details that "were not obtained from Samsung."
